Music of Van Mour’s Istanbul

This developing programme takes the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Van Mour as a point of departure for exploring the musical life of eighteenth-century Istanbul.

Courtly ceremony, urban entertainment, diplomacy, and everyday encounters form the visual and historical frame for a repertoire that asks how the city’s many communities heard one another.
